Research has shown that trans-resveratrol is anti inflammatory, antioxidant, platelet antiaggregatory and anticarcinogenic, and modulates lipoprotein metabolism. It may be helpful for the prevention of diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and cardiovascular disease, as well as for increasing stamina and longevity. Trans-resveratrol supplements are extracted from Japanese Knotweed, a traditional Chinese medicinal plant. In 2006, Italian scientists were the first to study trans-resveratrol in a vertebrate animal. Using a short-lived fish (median life span nine weeks) they found that a maximum dose of resveratrol increased median lifespan by 56% over control. Then, also in 2006, Harvard researchers reported that resveratrol counteracted the detrimental effects of a high-fat diet in mice. The high fat diet provided 60% of calories from fat and increased caloric intake by about 30% over the standard diet. Mice supplemented with 22 mg/kg of resveratrol, whether fed the high-fat or standard diet, had a 30% lower risk of death than mice fed the high-fat diet alone. Gene expression analysis indicated that resveratrol inhibited alteration in 144 of 155 gene pathways affected by the high-fat diet. Insulin and glucose levels in mice on the high-fat / resveratrol diet were closer to those on standard diet than to those on the high-fat alone diet. While the addition of resveratrol to the high-fat diet did not change blood cholesterol levels, post mortem examination of the livers of high fat / resveratrol mice revealed parameters similar to the standard diet mice, with or without resveratrol. Curcumin is a polyphenol that is extracted from the rhizome of Turmeric (Curcuma longa), a plant related to Ginger. The dried, powdered root of Turmeric is a well known culinary spice as well as an important remedy in Asian and Ayurvedic traditional medicine. Curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that may aid in the prevention of a number of conditions related to oxidative damage including cataracts, heart disease and cancer. Curcumin has been found to inhibit the effects of elevated homocysteine and C-reactive protein levels on arterial endothelial cells, inhibiting plaque build-up. It has been shown to inhibit COX-2 enzymes in a variety of cell types and researchers found it as effective as NSAID drugs for joint pain and swelling in arthritis, without NSAID side effects. Curcumin is being studied for use in preventing or slowing the progression Alzheimer’s disease. Curcumin may help prevent DNA mutations that can lead to cancer. Curcumin is a natural detoxifier that may help protect the liver from the damaging effects of alcohol, toxic chemicals, and some pharmaceuticals. Curcumin has been found to inhibit the growth of H. pylori, the bacteria known to be a causative factor in ulcers and stomach and colon cancer. Grape Seed Extract is a concentrated source of flavonoid compounds known as Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPC), including epicatechin and epigallocatechin. Studies show that OPC’s antioxidant potency is 20 times greater than vitamin C and 50 times greater than vitamin E. OPCs have been found to inhibit atherosclerotic changes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and poor circulation by limiting LDL peroxidation, inhibiting platelet aggregation and reducing inflammation. OPCs suppress production of endothelin-1, a protein that constricts blood vessels. OPCs help stabilize collagen and maintain elastin, critical connective tissue proteins. They have been fount to inhibit edema after injury or surgery, macular degeneration and complications of diabetes such as nerve and eye damage. OPCs may protect against ultraviolet damage to skin and reduce the rate of skin cancers and papilloma malignancies. Quercetin belongs to a group of plant pigments or flavonoids that give many fruits, flowers, and vegetables their color. It is a powerful antioxidant, a natural anti-histamine, and anti-inflammatory. Quercetin has been found to inhibit the peroxidation of LDL cholesterol, helping to prevent heart disease. Quercetin inhibits the release of histamines by basophile and mast cells, reducing the severity of an allergic reaction. Quercetin has also been found helpful in preventing prostate inflammation and cancer and may be helpful in reducing the inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis. Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme extracted from pineapple stem, often used for reduction of tissue inflammation and for digestive support. It is an effective anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory that works by breaking down fibrin, a blood-clotting protein that can impede circulation and cause soft tissue edema. Bromelain also blocks the production of prostanoids, compounds that can cause swelling and pain. Bromelain is thought to help maintain heart health and reduce the risk of stroke by its anti-inflammatory activity. Take one capsule of trans-Resveratrol Plus twice daily, more if desired.
